Strategically located along
the renowned Mississippi River, Clinton has an intriguing
150-year history. Its past glories as the "lumber capitol of
the world," railroad hub, and navigational resource were
captured in two ballets choreographed by GCB Carousel Dance
School Linda Luckstead. "River City Trilogy" was one of the
early ballets in Gateway Contemporary Ballet's repertoire,
and "River City Chronicle" was GCB's contribution to Iowa's
sesquicentennial in 1996. A third ballet by Luckstead,
"River" in 1997, celebrated the mighty Mississippi's
seasonal changes. Author Delores Solberg's narrative for
"River" was then illustrated and published as a charming
gift book, still available at several locations in Clinton.
When Gateway Contemporary Ballet was organized in 1983,
it brought a new cultural dimension to a city that already
was home to a symphony orchestra, summer stock, art
association, and community theater. Many other activities,
events, and festivals await the visitor to Clinton and the
Gateway area.
